The Wire 251 - January 2005 (Ken Hollings)
Bearing the subtitle "August 2004", Motion + Time Document One (DOR CD) offers a brief audiovisual report on an event organised by the label on board a moored canal barge at the s'Hertogenbosch Theatre Festival in the Netherlands last summer. Featured artists Apollon, nomadstation and Apeiron bring an immediacy and momentum to their electronic mediations on "chronology, movement, flexibility and re-order" - the principal themes of what is intended to be a continuing series of presentations. All three favour the broad sonic sweep, the deeper resonance, allowing unexpected harmonies and concordances to emerge from their sonic manipulation. Supplemented by an extract from Martin Picton's video piece Nothing Happened Today, this is timeless music compressed into selections of markedly short duration: the whole CD will barely claim a half hour out of your life.
All the same, Apollon favour slow progressions and wispy rhythms; nomadstation successfully transform field recordings into an extended sequence of cavernous reverberations; Apeiron's offerings, on the other hand, have the unsettling wiriness of early Tangerine Dream about them, although it's hard to imagine the later choosing a title like "Syphilitic Malaise" for one of their compositions.
